10 Days’ News Headlines Painted

For ten days in May of 2009, the street artist RIPO used news headlines as inspiration for a painting that he then covered with another painting of the following day’s news–a commentary on the over-saturation of media and fleeting nature of news–before peeling back a strip for each day to created a spectacularly striped, multicolor canvas. The process and result (sped up, of course) are captured quite prettily in this vidsticle of 10 Days’ News Headlines Painted by RIPO.

Jeanne-Claude and Christo’s 13 Most Amazing Artworks

Jeanne-Claude, one half along with her husband of the artist duo Jeanne-Claude and Christo, died on Wednesday in New York at age 74 of complications from a brain aneurysm. The couple’s most iconic work, incidentally, was probably their Gates installation in Central Park in 2005, but the two had been active since the 60s. (They were also working on two pieces at the time of Jeanne-Claude’s death, one in the United Arab Emirates and the other in Colorado, both of which will continue as planned.) To commemorate the duo’s incredible artistic ambitions and achievements we looked back at those pre-Gates years to compile this survey of Jeanne-Claude and Christo’s 13 Most Amazing Artworks.

We’ve become a little jaded in our old age (oh, hey, we celebrated our first anniversary on Tuesday!), and lately we find most lists very uninspiring. Every so often, though, a brilliant list reminds us why we signed up for this life of lists. Heavy’s listicle of the Top 5 Songs About Having Sex With Robots is one such list that makes us feel like our virile, young, list-writing selves of yesteryear. It even includes one of our favorite 80s electronic tracks off all time, Newcleus’ “Automan.”

The 25 Funniest Tombstones

There’s something very appealing about the idea of having a funny tombstone, rather than one that is solemn and muted. After all, if there’s anywhere that needs a little humor to lighten the mood it’s the cemetery. Manofest has done some impressive digging to find The 25 Funniest Tombstones, out favorite of which marks the day that breakfast died.

As much as ads annoy us if we have to sit through them at moments not of our choosing, when we get to watching beautiful commercials by incredibly creative designers and directors we can’t get enough. Our latest round-up of cool (mostly) new commercials is all about animation (mostly computer animation, but not exclusively), and imagining new worlds. We’ve pared down our favorites into these 10 Imaginative Animated Ads.

Why does that one character, the one who doesn’t get swallowed by a couch monster, have a yellow bean growing in his hair?

As much as we dislike Dr. Pepper (and all soft drinks, really), this ad is quite awesome. We wonder why there’s no bearded white guy in a toga in that support group.

18 Cats Sitting Like Humans

Though many seemed to think that the Internet would serve solely as a vessel for pornography and scams, those skeptics clearly underestimated the power of cats. Yes, our feline friends have become such web celebs (”welebs”?) that they’ve begun to take on certain human characteristics. For proof, we recommend checking out Kitty Stampede’s listicle of 18 Cats Sitting Like Humans. We even found a few precocious kitties missing from their list, and we’ve included them here. Clearly the knowledge is spreading quickly through the species. What’ll it be next, cats keeping pets like humans? Ha! (Uh-oh…)

13 Disgusting Pepsi Flavors

We’re very anti-soda to begin with, but when soft drink (or “pop”, as it’s called in our homeland) companies start getting all ridiculous with odd hybrid beverages we really lose interest. Seriously, give us water, coffee or something with an alcoholic kick in it, anything’s better than sugary and corn syrup-y soda.

As much as Coke is sort of the figure-head of the soda industry, their opponents at Pepsi have done everything in their power to reach an equally vast market, particularly with all kinds of spin-offs. oobject looks at some of the most disastrous in their listicle of 13 Disgusting Pepsi Flavors. And even though they make mention of Pepsi Raging Razzberry (pictured), it’s not technically included, and we thing it should be because the drink (briefly available in test markets in 1991) simultaneously makes a claim to include some semblance of something slightly natural (raspberries) and immediately refutes that claim by spelling it like some sort of monster truck (razzberry). “Natural flavors” indeed!

Mickey Mouse’s 22 Least Successful Looks

The famous clip that featured the debut of Mickey Mouse as we know him, Steamboat Willie, first aired on November 18, 1928, making today Mickey’s 81st birthday. (He appeared in Plane Crazy six months earlier, but that version of the character, considered by many to be more interesting, was scrapped and re-worked for Steamboat.)

He’s now probably the most (or second-most) recognizable character in the world, and in those many years since his debut he’s had his fair share of makeovers, costumes, transformations and reinterpretations, some successful, others not. That’s how we came up with this listicle of Mickey Mouse’s 22 Least Successful Looks.

By now, hopefully, you know all about the Three Wolf Moon T-shirt meme (if not, watch this), and if so then you’ll know just how parody-friendly this particular meme is. 100s of Deaths in Total Recall

One of these days we’re going to put together an epic listicle of supercuts (the fan-made videos that feature “every time x happens in y”), but until then we’re going to keep posting some of the best as stand-alone vidsticles. The latest we’ve come across features every death (including animals and robots) in the Arnold Schwarzenegger action movie on Mars Total Recall. It must have taken a long time, so kudos to the intrepid YouTuber who assembled the 100s of Deaths in Total Recall.
