Roman Polanski’s 12 Most Tortured Characters

As you may have heard, Polish-French director Roman Polanski was arrested over the weekend while arriving at the Zurich film festival in Switzerland in relation to a case from over 30 years ago in which he was convicted of having sex with a 13 year-old girl (who has subsequently forgiven him). We wish people would realize that we’re talking about one of the greatest filmmakers ever here, and let the man make beautiful movies already. Until then, trying to imagine what he’s going through, we’re looking at Roman Polanski’s 12 Most Tortured Characters.

Trelkovsky in The Tenant (1976)

Polanski plays his own tortured protagonist slowly going mad in the room he’s renting in Paris. How eerily prescient!

Wladyslaw Szpilman in The Pianist (2002)

Frail and weak, Szpilman has to play for his life.

Dr. Richard Walker in Frantic (1988)

Having your wife abducted would make any man act a little crazy, but having it happen in Paris, where the cops are useless and the nightclubs are (or were, apparently) really tacky is especially trying.

Oscar in Bitter Moon (1992)

In narrating his story to a younger man (Hugh Grant), Oscar relives all the pain (physical and psychological) of his relationship.

Dean in The Ninth Gate (1999)

Johnny Depp’s esoteric book collector has a pretty hard time figuring out where he fits into a scheme to bring the devil to earth. It’s a lot like Rosemary’s Baby, really.

Paulina in Death and the Maiden (1994)

Something of a throwback to Polanski’s earlier, smaller films, with Paulina and her husband living near the man who raped and tortured her years ago.

Tess in Tess (1979)

Poor Nastassja Kinski, slated to inherit all this money until she falls for her greedy cousin.

Nancy in What? (1972)

If she’s even the slightest bit as confused about this film as we are then she’s probably pretty tortured.

Carole in Repulsion (1965)

The trailer explains pretty much everything we were going to say.

Krystyna in Knife in the Water (1962)

Poor Krystyna is stuck on a boat in between two foolish men acting like children.

Rosemary in Rosemary’s Baby (1968)

Being used by a secret satanic society to give birth to the child of the devil is bound to make anyone a little jumpy.

Evelyn in Chinatown (1974)

You might think that Jack Nicholson’s J.J. Gittes has it pretty tough, but you’ll eventually appreciate that Evelyn’s lot in life is much, much worse.
