9 Spiders Named After Celebrities
Were we to ever name something after a celebrity (as opposed to someone more obvious and deserving, like ourselves), it would probably be a star (as in “Xeron 12 13 Philip Seymour Hoffman”) or color (like “Cameron Diaz Yellow”) or something less grandiose (maybe “Ol’ Dirty Bastard Lane”). One thing’s for sure, we would never name an insect or arachnid after anyone, because that seems an awful lot like an backhanded insult.
That didn’t stop the folks behind mental_floss’s listicle of 9 Spiders Named After Celebrities, who’ve given some of your favorite idols’ (and some more obscure folks) names to crawling web-spinners around the world. Weirdly, nobody has named one after Spider Man creator Stan Lee, or Toby Maguire, but biologist Gustavo Hormiga did name the fellow at right after one of the greatest actors ever. Find out who after the jump.

Befitting the grandeur of Welles’ personality, the Orsonwelles spider is actually a whole subspecies, so there are about half a dozen different Orsonwelles.
