13 Turbulent Airplane Flights in Pop Culture

A scary and strange news item earlier this week had to do with a Continental Airlines flight between Rio de Janeiro and Houston that encountered such intense turbulence that it had to make an emergency landing in Miami, where 26 passengers were treated for injuries. Many drew parallels to the recent Air France crash, although this Continental happening was a fairly unusual occurrence of violent, injury-causing turbulence. Meteorologists are still trying to determine the likely cause of the bumpy ride, but in the meantime we’ll be riding high on these 13 Turbulent Airplane Flights in Pop Culture.

Soul Plane

They haven’t even taken off and the plane is already bouncing!

Turbulence

Well, obviously.

Seinfeld

In the last episode of the series, the cast makes an emergency stop after Kramer causes turbulence trying to get water out of his ear (at 6:35 mark).

Red Eye

We never saw this, but we’re assuming things get shaky.

Flightplan

The turbulence is more figurative than literal here. Nevertheless, rough flight.

Snakes on a Plane

Slightly unusual kind of turbulence, but it totally counts.

Air Force One

Oh, the quaint old days when the president was his own counter-terrorism agent.

Con Air

Granted, they eventually crashed. Still, there was plenty of turbulence before that.

Airport ‘77

Does it really count as a crash if the plane ends up intact at the bottom of the ocean? Couldn’t it just be really bad turbulence?

U.S. Marshals

The sort-of-sequel to The Fugitive opens with a rather turbulent emergency landing.

Final Destination

The first of this ridiculous trilogy’s opening disasters is all about turbulence.

Fight Club

Ed Norton’s character fantasized about crashes any time there was turbulence.

Airplane

See? Turbulence can be funny too.
