Top 12 Movies with Zeppelins
The first zeppelin (named after inventor Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, seriously) took to the skies exactly 109 years ago, and though we’re a little sad they didn’t catch on as well as the airplane, we suppose all the flammable gases and whatnot are a plenty good reason. At any rate, to celebrate that 109th anniversary, here are Listicles’ Top 12 Movies With Zeppelins.
The Gospel Blimp (1967)
As far as we can tell, this is a movie about some preachy neighborhood Christians who use a blimp to broadcast Bible passages to the entire town.
Up (2009)
Sure, the main character floats in a house lifted by helium balloons, but the main baddie’s airship (glimpsed near the end of the above trailer) flies a blimp.
The Rocketeer (1991)
Few movie listicles would be complete without The Rocketeer, and in this case there’s the added bonus that it’s relevant. Though you’ll only notice it briefly in this retro trailer, the final battle occurs atop a Nazi blimp.
The Island at the Top of the World (1974)
Amazingly, this is the second time we’ve featured this ridiculous movie in a listicle (last time it was about awesome movie whales), but it’s such a rich pop cultural text that it also features major blimp action. (How else do you expect the heroes to reach the barbaric Viking community at the North Pole?)
Zeppelin (1971)
Well, obviously. Sadly, we couldn’t find a trailer, so this montage of stills set to the score will have to do.
Zeppelin vs. Pterodactyls (1936)
This is a bit of cheating, kinda, because it’s actually an episode from an ancient serial (you know, the things that used to play between double features at the movies like 70 years ago?), but it has an amazing cast (and, in its closing seconds, a pterodactyl).
The Hindenburg (1975)
Well, obviously this historical disaster had to be made into a movie. Oh the humanity!
Master of the World (1961)
Funny, because in reality a blimp would probably be just about the worst vessel from which to wage an intercontinental war.
Southland Tales (2006)
One of the climactic moments in this epic of anti-climaxes occurs onboard something called a MegaZeppelin.
Sky Bandits (1986)

Again, we couldn’t find a trailer, but the above poster art and the accompanying knowledge that the score is by Alfi should be enough to convince you of this film’s greatness.
Black Sunday (1977)
Some kind of international terrorism plot involves crashing a blimp into the Superbowl.
The Assassination Bureau (1969)
This weird historical pastiche of early sci-fi, historical epic and commentary on the United Nations features mad blimp action, including the climactic swordfight.
