Rap’s 13 Greatest Hockey References

Hip hop and hockey, despite their obvious alliterative camaraderie, seldom go together. This has a lot to do with the absence of African American athletes in the NHL, and the comparative abundance of black role models in every other professional American sports league. That’s not to say, however, that rappers don’t sometimes make (obscure, misunderstood) references to NHL players. Complex charts this lyrical trend with their listicle of Rap’s 13 Greatest Hockey References, and as much as some of the lines are brilliant, we really enjoy the hilariously Photoshopped images they made.

Our favorite, because he’s basically our favorite rapper right now, is this line from Washington D.C.’s Wale: “I do it for the Capital, Wale Ovechkin…More or less Lindros/Flyer than the rest of them…sideways talk’ll make your neck like Zednick.” And, appropriately, that’s his head on Alexander Ovechkin’s body at right.
