12 Iconic Photographs by Julius Shulman
Legendary modernist architectural photographer Julius Shulman (seen in the self-portrait at right) passed away Wednesday night at age 98, and over the course of his rich, visionary career, he captured some of the most legendary modern structures of the 20th century, both in the U.S. and abroad, by architects like Richard Neutra, Frank Lloyd Wright, Pierre Koenig and Charles Eames. Shulman was born in Brooklyn, but spent most of his life in California, and his imagery and style became irrevocably associated with the clean lines and glass panes of modern architecture, especially in the Midwest and on the West Coast.
He’s best known for his pictures of private homes (especially for the image of Los Angeles’s Case House No. 29, pictured immediately after the jump), but he also photographed many public institutions and even some skyscrapers. His portfolio more or less charts the way we’ve thought about and pictured modernist architecture in America during the second half of the 20th century. In honor of his life and work, we’ve assembled a listicle of images to remember him by, these 12 Iconic Photographs by Julius Shulman.
