10 Huge Celebrity Funerals

Michael Jackson’s mega-epic memorial service takes place today at Los Angeles’s Staples Arena, with over 17,000 people attending and a long list of celebrities lined up to pay their respects. But how does the guest list of Kobe Bryant, Brooke Shields, Berry Gordy, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Hudson, Magic Johnson, Al Sharpton, Usher, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and Lionel Ritchie (among others) stack up against other celebrity funerals? And with a total of about 20,000 people on hand, how big will MJ’s farewell stand alongside other mass remembrances? To figure all this and more out, here are the deets on 10 Huge Celebrity Funerals.

Marilyn Monroe (August 8, 1962)

Though throngs gathered to watch her hearse pass through the LA streets, Norma Jeane’s funeral was a small, 25-person affair organized by her second husband Joe DiMaggio at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery.

Elvis Presley (August 18, 1977)

A motorcade of 14 white Cadillacs and the iconic white hearse above made their way from Graceland to the Forrest Hill Cemetery as thousands of grieving fans watched from the sidewalks.

John Lennon (December 14, 1980)

Though no official ceremony was ever held, crowds of thousands gathered around the world six days after his death, including some 100,000 who joined Yoko Ono in silent remembrance in New York’s Central Park, where the Strawberry Fields memorial above was later built.

Princess Grace (September 18, 1982)

A stately funeral for the Philly-born, Hollywood-minted, Monegasque princess after her deadly stroke-induced car crash brought the likes of Princess Diana, Nancy Reagan, Cary Grant and just about every European with a regal title to the tiny Mediterranean principality. Her grave, above, is in the Monaco Cathedral.

Tupac Shakur (September 1996, canceled)

Tupac’s mother Afeni had planned a private ceremony, but it was canceled at the last minute. Instead, he was cremated and, apparently, his posse the Outlawz mixed his ashes with weed and smoked them. Which is really, really weird. Now this slightly tacky monument at the Tupac Shakur Foundation in Georgia serves as his memorial.

Christopher Wallace/Notorious BIG (March 18, 1997)

Though Biggie’s funeral service was held in a swanky Upper East Side church, his hearse and the accompanying motorcade took a massive detour through the Brooklyn neighborhoods where he grew up.

Gianni Versace (July 22, 1997)

The larger-than-life fashion mogul was mourned by some 2,000 attendees at his Milan funeral, including Elon John, Princess Diana, Carla Bruni, Giorgio Armani, Karl Lagerfeld, Carla Fendi, Tai Missoni, Sting, Carolyn Bessette and Luciano Pavarotti.

Princess Diana (September 6, 1997)

The epic state funeral for Princess Diana at Westminster Abbey is probably the closest thing to the spectacle that will be Michael Jackson’s funeral. Of course, with all is royal family trappings, it was much less gaudy than today’s event will likely be. Also, Elton John reprised “Candle in the Wind” only a few months after attending Versace’s wedding with the princess, a song originally dedicated to Marilyn Monroe.

Heath Ledger (February 9, 2008)

Though Ledger’s family chose to hold a private service and beach memorial in Perth, Western Australia, an impromptu and intermittend memorial is kept by fans outside the Soho apartment where he died in New York.

Farrah Fawcett (June 30, 2009)

Access to the ceremony, held at a downtown Los Angeles cathedral, was restricted to a small group of close friends and family. Her star on Sunset Boulevard’s Walk of Fame, meanwhile, served as an improvisational memorial.
