In one of our all-time favorite movies-about-the-movies movies, Steve Martin’s Bowfinger, Eddie Murphy’s characted makes the astute observation that whenever there’s a character with a mental handicap contending for an acting Oscar they invariably win. That hypothesis isn’t completely bulletproof, but it’s pretty close.
