It says a lot about a movie when its most emotionally engaging moment is the death of an animal (for one it means that your human actors are truly awful). It could also mean that you’re watching an animated movie, whose moments of violence and death are all the more painful because you were just expecting a nice kids’ movie. Those two possibilities cover more or less all the entries in Lemondrop’s listicle of The 11 Saddest Animal Movie Deaths of All Time, although we’re a little perplexed by the snubbing of poor, loving, innocent Petey from Dumb and Dumber:
