20 Feminist TV Characters

Looking over Jezebel’s listicle of 20 Feminist TV Characters (thanks Dana!), we’re starting to think that there’s something to the TV format that makes intelligent, empowered female characters more interesting and compelling than, say, their movie counterparts. After all, the list is pretty impressive, including Maude Findlay from Maude, Murphy Brown, 30 Rock’s Liz Lemon, Lisa Simpson and Roseanne.

That said, we’re tempted to argue that Janice Soprano Baccalieri from The Sopranos and Midge Pinciotti from That ’70s Show don’t really belong because their mild-to-major craziness kinda detracts from their feminist appeal, but we’ll leave that be. We are fairly surprised by some major ommissions, though, like another great Sopranos character Dr. Jennifer Melfi, any number of characters from Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Buffy, Willow, Tara, Joyce, Anya?) and Sydney Bristow from Alias (Jennifer Garner, at right). Who else did we (and Jezebel) miss?
