6 “In the Style Of” Ads

Part homage, part aesthetic piggy-backing, “in the style of” ads are pretty popular in the era of viral copy-cat trends. Two recent such commercials hit it big over the last few days, generating buzz by borrowing a well-known style and applying it to something new, funny and (often) inappropriate. To illustrate how multinational corporations and video artists alike are exploring this trend, here are 6 “In the Style Of” Ads.

Where the Wild Things Are Trailer + Everyone Poops = Trailer for Spike Jones’s Everyone Poops

They’re both childhood books and Jones’ DIY aesthetic is easily reproducible, and that’s as close a parallel as was needed to make this awesome new ad go viral.

Sir-Mix-A-Lot’s “Baby Got Back” video + Burger King + Spongebob Squarepants = Spongebob Got Back

When it’s a big company behind the viral campaign the production values tend to skyrocket, hence the cameo by Sir-Mix-A-Lot.

Stella Artois’ 3 Blockbusters Re-Made as French New Wave Films by Mother, London and Agustin Alberdi

As noted above, the results tend to be much more impressive when big companies plot viral ad campaigns. These three perfectly executed Stella ads are a case in point.

8 Mile + Shoot the Piano Player = 8 Kilomètres

Die Hard + Pierrot le fou = Dial Hard

24 + Contempt = Vingt-Quatres heures

David Lynch Coffee + Every David Lynch Movie = Branan Edgens‘ David Lynch Coffee Commercial

This is all the more impressive because Lynch’s style isn’t all that easy to imitate convincingly.
