7 Recent News Stories We’re Already Over

24-hour news channels and countless Internet outlets allow every news topic its allotted 15 minutes of fame and then some. Certain subjects produce a bounty of newsworthy details, but in a world where blogs update us three times a day on already-exhausted subjects and readers have a fly’s attention span, overexposure and ubiquity are too easy to come by. With that, a list of recent stories we’re already over:

1. Recession Trend Stories

For a word you learned in Social Studies and probably figured you’d never see happen in your lifetime, this recession is taking trend pieces by storm. It’s turning people to JesusABC has already written two pilots for comedies that will capitalize on “the scariest recession in recent memory,” and the noodle industry is booming.

2. The Death of Print

Newspapers are laying off employees, ending 401(k) matching, and canceling print subscriptions to other publications while advising employees to read them online instead. The Atlantic predicted that The New York Times would be out of print by May of this year, and the Google News Service has started running small text ads on its website to the dismay of journalists.

3. Nadya Suleman

Otherwise known as “Octomom,” Suleman has made headlines everywhere from the New York Times to TMZ, and Judge Judy declared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that “people who put her on television and make her into a celebrity are doing the rest of the world a big disservice.”

4. Twitter

Suddenly, accessing the Internet has become as obnoxious as waking up with a splitting hangover to a chorus of birds in every tree. New York magazine’s Will Leitch met with co-founder Biz Stone who drescribed Twitter as “Potentially being a new form of communication,” Samantha Bee added it to her list of applications along with Stalker and Grunter, and Martha Stewart Tweeted the death of her Chow puppy. The term Twitterati, similarly, has already outlasted its novelty value.

5. Chris Brown and Rihanna

Both canceled performances at the Grammys in February and the news quickly leaked that Chris Brown had allegedly beat Rihanna. Brown was charged with two felonies, assault and making criminal threats, and the couple is currently reconciling. Oprah warned, “If a man hits you once, he will hit you again. He will hit you again.”

6. Twilight

Stephanie Meyer, the author of the Twilight series, sold 22 million books in 2008, and college students have dropped their Ginsberg and Kerouac in exchange for the same “Modern Gothic” tales that 13 year-olds are reading. Also, if you’re one of those college kids lusting after vampires, you’ve probably been tagged as Bella Swan on Facebook in a “face-in-a-hole” album.

7. Watchmen

Zack Snyder’s controversial adaptation of the graphic novel launched fanboy reviews across the interweb. Devoted fans complained that they’d never be pleased because of slight deviations the film made from the graphic novel, and the “unfilmable” film cashed in at the box office with $83.2 million worldwide.
