7 Spectacular Spacewalks in Film

44 years ago today, Soviet astronaut Alexey Leonov performed the first spacewalk in human history (monkeys, meanwhile, had been spacewalking for decades). For the record, a spacewalk involves “extra-vehicular activity” while not on a planet, whereas a “moonwalk” involves gliding backwards on the surface of a planet (usually Earth or the moon). To commemorate Alexey’s achievements, Listicles chronicles these 7 Spectacular Spacewalks in Film.

It! The Terror From Outer Space (1958)

Before the world had even heard of our man Alexey, movie characters were spacewalking all over their ships like it wasn’t no thing.

The Phantom Planet (1961)

Possibly the first instance of the “falling into space during spacewalk” movie death, of which you’ll be seeing more shortly.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

Funny how when your technology turns against you, walking becomes such a dependable tool. Unfortunately, also an easy tool for an evil computer to neutralize, as HAL demonstrates here.

Silent Running (1972)

We can’t tell if this movie is about the Cold War, or some kind of anti-environmentalist propaganda. Either way, next time we almost re-watch WALL-E we’ll check this out instead.

Space Truckers (1996)

Further proof that Dennis Hopper is psychologically incapable of turning down an offer.

Red Planet (2000)

Further proof that Val Kilmer is psychologically incapable of turning down an offer (and that he gets much fewer than Dennis Hopper).

Mission to Mars (2000)

Tim Robbins’s death-by-spacewalk in this Brian De Palma fiasco was really just foreshadowing the three-hour hommage to self-sacrificing artists better known as Craddle Will Rock.

Stick to WALL-E, Silent Running is wholly disappointing. Also, best spacewalk is in fact WALL-E, during the dance between WALL-E and EVE.
