Where do the local and organic food revolutions leave genetically modified crops? Well, aside from clandestinely taking over the food supply in North America and being banned in parts of Europe, GM crops have sort of fallen off the map. However, WebEcoist provides a helpful listicle of 7 Intriguing Genetically Modified Fruits and Vegetables, which highlights the often honorable goals behind these hybrid crops. There’s the insulin-producing lettuce for diabetics, nutrient-packed grapples (grapes + apples) and nutritious, cholesterol- and sodium-free pluots (plums + apricots). Others, meanwhile, seem strictly created for novelty, like the lemato (lemon + tomato, at right), which might actually make a great luxury cocktail ingredient now that we think about it. Lemato Bloody Mary anyone?
