6 City Blogs to Replace 6 City Papers

As you, web-savvy reader, likely already know (and are actively precipitating by getting your information from this blog), the nation’s major newspapers are dying. Several paper-owning conglomerates have filed for bankruptcy, many smaller companies are losing money every day, and The New York Times took out a loan on its own building.

In several cities near you, a daily paper is shutting down, going online-only or slashing its coverage and distribution. Yesterday the Times, incidentally, featured a run-down of the various threatened companies and papers wherein it was predicted that 2010 would likely see one or more major cities losing their only major daily newspaper. We see these various waning media monopolies, though, as so many opportunities for more varied content and coverage. With that in mind, we offer these 6 City Blogs to Replace 6 City Papers.

DCist (replacing The Washington Post)

Our favorite outpost of the Gothamist blog empire, DCist is especially useful for cultural and municipal news. And with new posts every 15 minutes to half hour on any given weekday, there’s more than enough content to keep DCers up to date on their city’s happenings. Sure, the content’s not as well written as the Post, but as more of that paper’s laid-off staff come looking for blogging jobs, we expect that to change.

SFist (replacing The San Francisco Chronicle)

Quickly catching up to its DC and New York cousins, cultural news still dominates at SFist. Increasingly, though, it’s mixed with local news and politics, as well as an appropriately activism-oriented slant to many issues in the city and beyond. Also, we were never really that impressed with the Chronicle, so any alternative is welcome.

Glocally Newark (replacing The Star-Ledger)

With its splashy design and cute tag line (”Think Global. Be Local”), this hip new Newark blog features its cultural, food and bar coverage most prominently. It actually also serves as an astute sifter of local news and politics. It’s become our go-to blog for news of the northern New Jersey city that is either soaring to new heights or plunging to greater depths every time we check in.

Secrets of the City (replacing Minneapolis’s The Star Tribune)

A great resource for all arts and community goings on in the Twin Cities, Secrets of the City is the remaining online component of now-defunct alt-weekly The Rake. Its blog MNSpeak: Talk also provides extensive coverage to local news and municipal politics.

New Haven Independent (replacing The New Haven Register)

Truly a local community paper in blog form, the Independent provides all the mind-numbing minutiae of municipal coverage that outsiders couldn’t care less about but is crucial to fostering an informed community of engaged citizens.

Boston Daily (replacing The Boston Globe)

Since launching in August 2007, Boston Daily has expanded its coverage pretty swiftly, to the point of now being a vital local news outlet and cultural resource. It’s also part of a larger online community that covers pretty much everything in Beantown and beyond, all under the banner of Boston Magazine.
