About a week ago we alluded to how dangerous soda can be, especially for kids, but didn’t really offer much credible evidence or helpful advice to back up the claim. Thankfully we’ll never have to, because The Best Article Every Day has this helpful listicle outlining 5 Reasons and 8 Steps to Quit Drinking Soda. We knew all about the insomnia, tooth decay, weight gain and poor hydration effects of soda, but point number 4 is something new:
4. Artificial stimulant which alters your mind.
Caffeine (which is in most soft drinks like Coke) is also a psychoactive stimulant drug. It affects the central nervous system and alters brain function, resulting in temporary changes in perception, mood, consciousness and behavior. By increasing the levels of adrenaline (a stress hormone) in your body, you end up setting off feelings of anxiety and tension in your body. Instead of being able to operate as a fully conscious being, you end up having less control of your thoughts, emotions and behavior.
This might explain some of Listicles’ less high-minded posts of late.
