5 Fictional Snow Days

As you may or may not know, record snowfall has hit the Midwest and East Coast of the U.S. over the last two days. Here in New York schools even got a rare snow day, and we’re told children are out in the streets celebrating with snowball fights, igloos, snow angels and the like. Meanwhile, locked up in our chilly office, we’re isolated from the experience of Snow Day ‘09 so, as is our habit, we’re looking to fiction for our fix. Won’t you joing us under our slanket as we warm up with Listicles’ 5 Fictional Snow Days?

The Daily Show’s Apocalypse Snow

We had a big snow day back in 2003, you may recall, though as the Daily Show news team suggests, perhaps it was a terrorist attack masquerading as a snow day…

Groundhog Day

Sure, the film’s principal backdrop is Groundhog Day, but its endless repetition is facilitated by a massive snow storm that traps the Pittsburgh TV crew in Puxatony.

The Simpsons

Snow days tend to fuel school children’s elation and newscasters’ penchant towards hyperbole.

The Day After Tomorrow

Perhaps this film could be re-titled The Snow Day After Tomorrow, as much of its visual effects extravaganza consists in blanketing typically snow-free city with digital powder.

The Ice Storm

Cities covered in snow are one thing (worst comes to worst, we can still use the sewers and subways to get around), but snow days in the suburbs are a different beast, as Ang Lee’s icy ode to middle-class angst shows.
