14 Artsy Toilets

Informally, this week is Art Fair Week in New York, with a half-dozen large-scale festivals providing showrooms for galleries from all over the world to display their artists’ work. One of the newer fairs in this year’s mix is Fountain New York, which features Marcel Duchamp’s iconic urinal scultpure as its logo. Contemplating their snazzy logo, we began to realize what an integral role toilets of various sorts have played in the history of modern art. To prove this thesis, here are Listicles’ 14 Artsy Toilets.

Toilet Paper Toilet

Self-reflexively points out the vulnerability of the modern toilet and life.

Booty-Trapped Toilet

Reflects our cultural phobia of toilets and, ultimately, death.

Branded Toilet

Reflects late-capitalism’s unending search for even the most distasteful new advertising spaces.

Candy-Coated Toilet

A pop art attack on our toilet phobias.

Toilet Dish

Performance art recuperation of the oft-blighted bathroom appliance.

Toilet Tank Diver

Underlining our complete ignorance of the mechanics that make devices we rely upon function.

Fish Tank Toilet

Protested by animal rights activists, actually makes a very strong environmentalist statement by connecting toilet flushing to the fish it kills.

The Guitar Toilet

Enshrines ceramic toilets among a long tradition of American folk arts including woodwork and acoustic guitar.

Jellyfish Toilet

Suggests the toilet be seen as an object of natural, unknowable beauty, rather than a household necessity.

Monster Toilet

Playing on our socially sanctioned repressed fear of toilets, and death.

Toilet Planter

Reaffirms the dirty secret that what goes into toilets ends up in nature, we are all a part of nature, and mortal.

Soft Toilet

Post-sculptural installation calls attention to the brutalist bulk of conventional toilets.

Starfish Toilet

Connecting our abusive water consumption to rapidly-dying marine life.

Teethed Toilet

Forces us to sit, facing our fears of toilets, the abject, death.

  3. Yeah, the toilets are cool, but you don’t have to come up with some “deep” meaning for what they symbolize just because you are some pretentious blow-hard who likes to call himself an artist. They are just toilets with some fancy paint on them. It would not have been as painful to look at if I didn’t read the captions below the images.

  7. Hey Craip, don’t be so hard on him. Art students have to find something to do once they graduate and realise they’ve wasted 3 years studying something so mind numbingly pointless.
