Weekly Wednesdays: Valentine’s Day Listicles

We had this incredible idea for a great Valentine’s Day listicle that you would have all loved and never been able to put down. It was going to be the most useful, unsentimental, lucid list about love you’d ever laid eyes on. Then we got swamped with other folks’ Valentine’s listicles (”Valensticles“?) and ran out of time writing our own.

And that’s okay, because isn’t Valentine’s all about being selfless and appreciating the people you spend all year taking for granted? In that spirit, this installment of our round-up of listicle trends Weekly Wednesdays is completely devoted to some of our favorite sites’ Valentine’s Day Listicles.

  • 10 Far Out Valentine’s Gifts: Oddee has swiftly become our go-to source for really random listicles, and we really enjoy these strange gifts, especially the edible underwear (though we’re surprised they missed bubble wrap underwear).
  • Top 10 Reasons to Look Forward to Valentine’s Day: Ethan Imboden’s sweet listicle for the Huffington Post takes a healthily humorous slant on a holiday that’s pretty universally disliked. Hence reason number 8: “It will almost certainly be better than the day before, which is Friday the 13th.”
  • 10 Valentines For Food Lovers: This listicle of cute cards from our favorite foodie blog proves that a well-chosen card can be as effective as a delicious dinner date. That’s our favorite below:

  • 21 Girlfriends and Boyfriends From Hell: We have a love-hate relationship with Entertainment Weekly, but this great listicle is unusually accurate and interesting (except, perhaps, the absence of any characters from Six Feet Under, all of whom were disastrous relationship partners).
  • The 4 Worst American Myths About Romantic Relationships: Margaret Ruth’s HuffPo love listicle cuts through some tired conventions of relationship advice, like “Relationships Take Work” and “Relationships Require Compromise.” Her qualifiers are much appreciated on this day of international relationship inspection.
  • 8 Ways to Affair-Proof Your Marriage: Therese Borchard’s how-to long-lasting love guide is a good companion piece to Ruth’s myth-busting, offering very clear and concrete tips for those striving for the golden monogamy standard.

  • 5 Tips for Surviving Valentine’s While Single: This therapeutic listicle by Sophie Keller suggests reasons why being single on Valentine’s Day needn’t be saddening. What about awesome-fun alternatives to the couples-centric Valentine’s routine?
  • 15 Moments That Define Any Relationship: Wow, what a brutally serious-sounding listicle this is. Thankfully it’s actually quite silly and riddled with cliches. Sorry Women’s Health, you won’t be getting a Valentine’s from Listicles.
