Weekly Wednesdays: The Historical Listicle

Worst. President. Ever.

Worst. President. Ever.

Another week has gone by and another slate of listicles we can barely keep up with has been published. Even with the addition of our list-submitting service, The Listocracy (start submitting lists today!), we’ve been unable to cover the Interweb’s perpetual cycle of lists. In this edition of our list-of-lists survey, Weekly Wednesdays, we chronicle The Historical Listicle, which made appearances everywhere this week between Presidents’ Day and the unprecedented economic stimulus package. Truly a historical week!

  • 10 Worst Presidents: Proof that academics are prone to listicle-making too, this C-Span survey confirmed what we’ve known for years but never said out loud: James Buchanan (at right) was such a useless president! (via Asylum)

  • 5 Composers Murdered by the Nazis: This interesting mental_floss listicle not only features snippets of works by these five murdered composers, but also sheds some light on the Nazis’ strange “model Jewish community” at the Terezin concentration camp, where most of them created their last works.
  • 3 Famous Masked Balls: We’ve still never been to a masked ball, but judging by the guest lists at these events we probably wouldn’t have the cultural clout or wardrobe funds to attend anyway. No, we’ll just be content watching the incredible masked ball scene from George Franju’s Judex:

  • 10 Great Love Affairs in History: We love a saucy affair set in the lavish period world of historical high-society as much as the next blog, but we’re a little surprised by recent omissions like Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
  • 4 Other Times Wall Street Tanked: See? Our current financial situation isn’t that bad. We’ve been through exactly the same thing before. Literally exactly the same thing, at least 4 other times.
  • 20 “Trials of the Century” of the 20th Century: Yes, it’s true, we media types occasionally hyperbolize to create more interest in our quickly outdated products (see above listicle comments). Here’s hoping the 21st century’s first “trial of the century” will be United States v. George W. Bush.
  • 6 Wordsmiths Who Couldn’t Spell: This listicle proves one of two things: that despite all evidence to the contrary, people today are wicked spellers; or, that word processor spell-check systems have made copy editors’ work about 90% easier.
  • 10 Awesome Moments in Al Bundy History: Yes, well, not all historical listicles (”historisticles”?) can be about lavish parties, high-powered romance, literary history and economic book-keeping. And besides, this speech is plenty historic:
