We’ve always known that many sports – especially motor sports – are environmentally disastrous. Additionally, even with environmentally neutral sports, the ways we tend to play and practice make them harmful. For instance, it came as no surprise to us that TreeHugger’s listicle of 7 Un-Environmental Sports and Activities includes sky-diving, motor boat racing and NASCAR (what about Formula One?), but we weren’t expecting to see soccer at number 2. One shocking omission we found, meanwhile, was the absence of sports that require tearing down indigenous vegetation in order to plant and maintain immaculately manicured and heavily watered green lawns, like lawn bowling and golf.
