18 Media Packaging Disasters

We’re all for innovative packaging design, we’ll even buy a special edition of some pop cultural artifact if the few extra bucks mean we’ll have something extra cool on our shelf.

That said, sometimes packaging designers get a little nutty with their ideas and we end up with silly things like the chronically detaching tin and cardboard Total Recall DVD case (at right). That would be number 8 in The Onion’s A.V. Club’s listicle of 18 Media Packaging Disasters. Check out our addition to the disastrous design tally after the jump, then head over to The Onion for you fill.

That wonderfully misguided DVD case below would be a recent special edition of Basic Instinct, made from ugly clear plastic and containing nothing more than a DVD disc and an ice pick (in reference to the ice pick that plays a crucial role in the film’s denouement). Scratchy pointy things and CDs, as you may know (but some packaging designer clearly doesn’t), tend to not get along very well.
