10 Classic Drag Performances in Film

Sure, performing a different sexuality might be an Academy-sanctioned acting feat with Sean Penn’s Oscar for Milk, but drag performances rarely get as much cred (look for a notable exception after the jump). And there have been some pretty terrific drag performances in film.

Just look at this great listicle from Future of Classic, which claims to feature only the best for its 10 Classic Drag Performances in Film. Of course, we can think of a few more deserving entries (John Travolta in Hairspray, really?).

Hilary Swank in Boys Don’t Cry

Not quite as optimistic or uplifting as The Rocky Horror Picture Show, this is also one of the few award-show approved drag performances.

Michael Caine in Dressed to Kill

Brian De Palma’s re-working of Vertigo is a great example of what an agile filmmaker he is, and features an outstanding drag performance by Michael Caine.

Whoopi Goldberg in The Associate

This fun comedy was, in many ways, a black feminist revision of Tootsie for 90s New York corporate culture.

Val Kilmer in Willow

Although the performance sort of breaks down in the moment above, Val is pretty convincing. We kinda miss Val Kilmer…
