10 American States’ Scary Gun Laws

We could have sworn Virginia was for lovers, not gun nuts.

Yesterday a bill proposed by Virginia’s Democratic Governor Tim Kaine to require background checks for the sale of guns at gun shows in the traditionally Republican state was rejected. The day before another of Kaine’s laws was repealed, this one seeking to prohibit individuals carrying concealed firearms into establishments selling alcohol. Needless to say, we’re canceling our St. Patrick’s Day trip to colonial Williamsburg. This got us thinking, though, that outside the limited purview of our urban, Northern surroundings, this great nation of ours must have some scary gun laws. Here. then, are 10 American States’ Scary Gun Laws.

  • Alaska: Not a huge surprise that the Great State of Palin allows residents to carry handguns whether concealed or not. You don’t need a license or anything, but some municipalities would really like it if you’d get one just to make everyone feel a little safer, not that you have to or anything, but just out of courtesy.
  • Connecticut: Residents who get a permit for a pistol or handgun – which, unless they are proved to be mentally unstable shouldn’t be a problem – can carry it openly or concealed, and visitors to sunny Connecticut can apply for a non-resident permit through the mail, allowing for unfussed gun tourism.
  • Mickey doesn't have a concealed gun permit, so must carry his pistol in plain sight.

Mickey doesn't have a concealed gun permit, so must carry his pistol in plain sight.

Florida: Memorably, terrifyingly, Florida became a “stand your ground” state in 2005, which means that gun owners can use deadly force if their home is broken into or if they are being attacked. Add to that the fact that Florida gives permits to nearly any residents and visitors over 21, allows the carrying of weapons in cars and that the state prohibits the firing of employees who bring concealed weapons to work, and we’re just going to go ahead and cancel our trip to Disneyworld.

  • Indiana: Barring a criminal record, residents of Indiana over the age of 18 can attain a firearm license withing 90 days of applying. The only catch is that they can’t take their gun to the Indiana State Fair. Bummer.
  • Kentucky: Glove compartments are sacred in Kentucky, and no individual or group can remove a firearm you’ve concealed in your glove compartment (even if you leave it unlocked). Also, in the event of a disaster or emergency the state can’t confiscate private citizens’ weapons. Basically, private militias in Kentucky are better protected than municipal or state police.
  • Maryland: Any resident with a driver’s license can apply for a  gun permit and, upon watching a safety video, go buy guns. Word on the street is that the mandatory video looks something like this:

  • Michigan: Anyone over the age of 18 can buy a gun from a private point of sale, but possession of tasers is completely prohibited. Seriously, like 20 people died in a whole year from those taser things.
  • Montana: Unlicensed gun ownership, concealed and car carrying of that weapon is allowed, but not in bars, banks and government buildings and only outside of cities and campsite. Thankfully that leaves roughly 100% of the state open for gun-toting.
  • New Hampshire: Carrying a concealed weapon on your person or in your car requires a license (which’ll cost you 1-2 weeks and $10 if you’re a local, $20 if you’re visiting), but otherwise you’re encouraged to live free or die.
  • Pennsylvania: Except in the state’s “first class cities” (which in PA’s case just means Philly, although we’d beg to differ), no license is required to openly carry a firearm.

  1. Gun Laws in this country are absolutely herendous. I dont understand Virginia rejecting the bill. It seems people who need a gun, have records and dont want to be rejected. Even those people with no records, they should wanna feel safe knowing, the people who are in possesion of a fire arm, have a clean record. I dont understand the thinking. United States is still one of the only nations with such easy laws on guns. People preach their “right to bear arms”,well I hope they understand those who agree with strict laws are scared. We are scared of anyone, anyone crazy enough to do anything with a gun. We see this every year, mulitple times,”shooting kills 6″….how many times will we have to see this headline? Being older then 18 and living in Michigan, I feel as if I need a gun. Basically thinking everyone else has one,I need the protection. This shouldnt be. Why should I feel threatned every time I walk out of my house? But with a world where everyone has a 9MM in their back pocket,I feel as if I need one to. So how about we get rid of them all,all those handguns that kill thousands of people every year, then maybe people wont feel the need to bear arms, and want to feel like their vulnerable. People always say “guns dont kill people, People kill people”…im going to rephrase that..” people dont kill people, Crazy people with guns, kill people”

  2. Theodore Bundy killed at least 30 people without ever touching a firearm. As Ted brutally bludgeoned Lisa Levy and Margaret Bowman in the safety of their Florida Sorority house do you think they would have been opposed to Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law that allows Women to stop themselves from being slaughtered more violently than hogs in a slop pen? Speaking of pigs had these women “Stood their ground” and put an end to their own attack weeks later Ted would not have raped and slaughtered innocent little 12-year-old Kimberly Leach, leaving her tiny body under a pig shed.

When asked why he carries a firearm a friend replied: “Because a whole cop is too heavy to carry”

Protect yourself and your loved ones from those who have knives, ball bats, claw hammers, and superior strength who wish to do you harm.. or wait for the Police and Morgue to take care of matters.

  3. I was simply doing research on concealed carry and “stand your ground” and came upon this article… Ben, did you happen to dig further, do more research, look at any statistics on gun violence, gun-related deaths, etc. between both the states noted above and other states that have stringent gun laws? “Guns don’t kill people…” so on and so forth, here’s a two part question: If you were in a fast food restaurant and someone wields a firearms to rob the place and accidental or otherwise, shoots your loved one dead, would another patron having a concealed carry permit takes upon him or herself to shoot the robber possibly make you feel more comfortable with the idea that your loved one quite possibly would have not been harmed? And assuming this locale allows said permits, is it less likely, or more likely that someone would try and rob said establishment? As an example, would New York City and Los Angeles not benefit from allowing law-abiding citizens concealed carry permits, considering they have high crime rates?

  4. You anti-gunners are a bunch of idiots!
Is your world rainbows sky’s and candy cane lanes?
Look at the facts. The tighter the gun laws the higher the crime rate. Criminals do not abide by the law. The author here made fun of Florida’s laws. Funny thing is the crime rate has gone down since the change. Explain that!
It is fairly simple, Enforce the laws we have, nothing more, nothing less.

  5. A man who gives up freedom for safety deserves neither - Ben Franklyn

I have to say not big on gun laws, I am big on personal freedom and until the ecucation system in this country teaches that “one persons freedom ends where another persons freedom begins”, I will continue to carry a weapon. I believe that my second ammendment right to be secure in my person and bear arms to protect the consitution of the United States, superceeds any Law written by any joker with a pen. That list of jokers includes the supreme court. I have been told countless times how justice is suposed to be blind. If that is truly the case then why do we talk about how supreme court justices are either conservative or liberal? Justice should be blind and the oath a judge takes must superceed his/her personal feelings

  6. Let’s just put a sign up in the front lawn of any anti-gunners that reads ‘No firearms on the premise’

  7. WOW WOW RETARD !!! Holy shit have you ever been shot at? Do you think cops should carry guns? Have you looked at the states you noted as crazy gun law states, gun crime statistics? No im sure you have not, your right you mickey mouse close minded idiots should stay out of these states hopefully you get what you’re looking for in California. Buy the way look at the Switzerland’s gun laws and statistics fuck please. Open your fucking mind dumb ass!!!!

  8. To the Author,

If your home is ever broken into, or some thug decides that he wants to rape your wife while you’re watching TV in your bed, just ask the criminal to PLEASE stop. It works every time for you liberals. As for us conservatives, we have find that peace, love and happiness doesn’t work when dealing with people who care nothing for your civil liberties. So I will continue to protect me and mine and “stand my ground” with a .45. I say hell yes to Florida.

  9. florida boy and anybody that breaks in my house is gettin a belly full of 12 gauge followed swiftly buy a couple .40’s just to be safe, scary gun laws? your a fucktard and i mean that in the most intelligent way

  10. Wow folks, thanks for all the impassioned (and, often, terrifying) responses. A late addition to the states with scary gun laws list:

Tennessee, which will soon allow guns in restaurants and bars (!)

  11. Hooray for bias media. Don’t you know we drive on the right side of the road here in America? Get off the left.

Gun control means hitting your target. You can’t control the criminals getting them but we’re going to put restrictions on good people getting them?

There will always be murderers. The tool they use isn’t the issue, THEY ARE.

  12. I agree with Kyle. Stop putting restrictions on guns. Its not guns that kill people its guns. Either way criminals will get their hands on weapons. If someone breaks in to your house its your right to protect your family. I am sorry but I am not going to wait for the cops to come to my house to save the day. I am sure if the family in Chesire, CT had protection they would still be alive.

  13. I live in Florida. I travel a lot around the country and would NEVER go to a state that does not allow me to carry my glock loaded 24/7 concealed. (40 states do) I grew up in N.Y. (with one of the strongest gun laws in the country) and had guns pulled on my 7 times. 7 times.. Did those insane N.Y. laws stop the criminals robbing me? no. now I stop them. Lucky I never had to use it. I have bene carrying for 7 years. and never shot anyone by accident.

HURRAY: Now we can carry to Federal parks and forest also.

FYI I carry a 45 because a 9 just would not put a big enough hole in a crackhead.

I am not Pro Gun, What I am is Involved in Police and Judicial system independent - Personal, Family and Home Contingency Operations.

  14. I am a tranplanted NYer living in Florida and I have kept a .357 in my home since moving to Florida. I also have a cc permit and carry a 9mm. When 2 guys can run up into 3 dunkin donuts in my area and shoot a 70 something year old man in the face and another 70 something year old man in the back during the course of a robbery, there is no way I am going anywhere without having my gun on me. I had enough times where I felt I was in a bad neighborhood or potentially in a bad situation with no firearm in NY…I am not doing it down here. I could imagine the feeling I would have if I was somewhere with my wife and someone wanted to do us harm and I was not able to protect her. Cops are usually not there to stop a violent crime….they just come clean up the mess. I am not waiting for them to come clean up me or my family, they can come clean up the bad guy.

  15. Ben, you’re an idiot. Your comment that “Florida gives permits to nearly any residents and visitors over 21…” is erroneous and shows a remarkable ignorance regarding your “research”. Florida requires an applicant to submit to a Federal background check, get fingerprinted and photographed, attend and pass a gun safety course, and complete a lengthy application. I imagine the rest of your research probably shows the same care in obtaining the facts as you showed in your Florida research. Please do us all a favor and don’t travel to Disneyworld or anywhere else for that matter. And please, if you don’t have all of the facts, shut the fuck up.

  16. Ive been in the military and currently Im a fire fighter/ paramedic, I see what people can do to each other first hand. Its not law enforcements job to protect but to enforce the laws. It is the persons responcabilty to protect them selves. and if you would like to do it with words or a firearm the choice is yours. But which do you think they are going to pick. My sons and I have several firearms and have sent thousands of rounds down range for fun, training and comp, yet weve killed nor robbed anyone. People like you have brought more rights to murders and thugs that people are not afraid of the justice sysytem anymore makeing ccw a must. please travel and when you need to protect yourself or your family hopfully someone with a firearm will be there to do what you cant

  17. I pity the ignorant author of this article. His sarcasm and critical views of these states and their affirmation of the 2nd Amendment is lame at best.

Maybe he’d change his mind if a group of 3-4 men broke into his house in the middle of the night and gang-raped his wife at knife-point? Geesh, … if only he had a gun … he could have stopped them … but then again … maybe that’s his fantasy and he just wants to watch and hope that nobody gets hurt?

  18. Typical liberal author write and run.

  19. South Florida was known as Dodge City because of the out of control violence and the drug trade there until a tremendous shootout on the streets of Boca Raton happened in 1986. That’s when Florida took the courageous step of allowing private citizens to actually exercise their constitutional right to bear arms. In 1987 the first of the modern concealed carry laws was put in place in Florida. Whiney liberals cried that it would be Dodge City. It was already Dodge City. But a funny thing happened. The violent crime rate dropped like a rock tossed from the top of the Empire State building. Yes it went DOWN, not up as you wildly suggest ignoring all known facts.

The country is on to the gun grabbers. Within 20 years nearly every state had a concealed carry law and the result was the same every time. The violent crime rate dropped by a huge margin. But that doesn’t seem to matter to you. As long as you get to stand on your soapbox and tell the world what an enlightened genius you are and that the rest of us are savages you’re happy. To heck with the facts, you have righteous indignation on your side.

Well that’s not enough anymore. We aren’t going back to the anti-gun laws. Criminals don’t obey laws. The only way to deal with an armed criminal is with a gun. The Supreme Court gave us the 2nd ammendment back and it’s about to make sure whiners can’t change it.

Your side LOST pal. You were dead wrong. More guns mean more peace, not less. The facts are in and they prove everything I have just said. Get over yourself and get off that Big Rock Candy Mountain you live on. This is the real world and I want protection. Until you can guarantee that there will never be any more violence in the world I will keep my guns. And you won’t take them ever again.

  20. Incredible. listicles.thelmagazine.com deserves an oscar.

  21. [...] day here at Listicles, huh? Well, there are worse things for all the posts on one day to be about (guns, for instance), and we have orchestrated a beautiful symmetry (so much art to listicles!) by [...]

  22. Always a good idea to only allow agents of the state to be armed. This is the profound wisdom left to us by the likes of Heinrich Himmler. History proves that such an arrangement ensures your longevity and ability to retain private property. Damn you, 2nd Amendment! Why must you haunt me with your scary scariness!?!
