9 Recipes for the 2009 Super Bowl
Super Bowl weekend is at hand, and like those scenes in disaster movies where everybody realizes they need to stock their bomb shelters with food, the grocery stores will soon all be looted of appropriate edibles. So check out these 9 Recipes for the 2009 Super Bowl and get yourself to the supermarket before they’re sold out of everything but spam (and vegetarian spam).
Nachos
- Super Bowl Nachos: Not for the lighthearted, this artery-busting recipe features two kinds of cheese and two kinds of meat (chorizo, yum!).
- The Ultimate Vegetarian Nachos: This relatively healthy nacho recipe might make its way into our kitchen on Sunday. We especially appreciate the specification: “Sharp (old) cheddar cheese.” Spicy salsa isn’t enough folks, your cheese needs to pack a punch.
- Salmon Nachos: If you don’t dig into absurdly heavy food easily but want a little something animal-y in your nachos, this tasty-sounding recipe that basically substitutes salmon for ground meat is probably exactly what you’re looking for. (No doubt it can also be made with fresh salmon, father than the canned variety.)
Fried Chicken
Southern Fried Chicken: Sure, neither team is technically from The South, but the game is being played in Tampa, and so a big bucket of Southern-style fried chicken is completely appropriate Super Bowl 43 fare. Try to balance with a salad or something.
- Southern Fried Vegetarian “Chicken”: This delicious-sounding recipe substitutes seitan for chicken, but in every other respect mimics your traditional fried chicken recipe. Now where to find seitan?
- Thai Fried Chicken: On this most American of celebrations, why not bring a little variety to the proceedings with this delicious recipe for Thai-style fried chicken. Just make sure nobody mistakes the fish sauce for dip, that would be bad.
Cocktails
Quarterback Sack: This miniaturized and liquored up Bloody Mary sounds positively destructive. On the other hand, it will go with salsa and nachos more pleasantly than any sweet cocktail.
- Herradura Football: This sweet little tequila number (with its AFC and NFC variations) is the kind of delicious tropical delight capable of making us forget we’re stuck in the frigid North while everybody onscreen parties in balmy Florida.
- Red Zone Refresher: A little fancy with the ingredients, this minty, citrus-y, apple-tinged cocktail with a splash of green chartreuse sounds great, provided you can make it to the store in time to purchase the necessary provisions.
