20 Ridiculously Gerrymandered Congressional Districts
A few years back (we can’t say how many) we took an American Politics 101 class during our freshman year of college and learned all about the American tradition of Gerrymandering. Aside from the tactical partisan redistricting practice’s funny name, we didn’t think a whole lot of it, and the knowledge quickly sank into an unused stockpile deep in our brains not unlike the place where Indiana Jones’s recovered artifacts are stored.
It had never occurred to us, we must admit, that this nearly two hundred-year old practice was still as prevalent today, nor that it might make for some terrific cartographic art. Fortunately, Slate has pulled our coat to some of the most preposterously-shaped Congressional districts in the U.S.A. So join us for some adventures in electoral politics, our favorites from Slate’s 20 Ridiculously Gerrymandered Congressional Districts.
Arizona’s 2nd District, Rep. Trent Franks, R.

California’s 38th District, Rep. Grace Napolitano, D.

Illinois’ 4th District, Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D.

Illinois’ 17th District, Rep. Phil Hare, D.

Maryland’s 3rd District, Rep. John P. Sarbanes, D.
