Top 5 White Russian (and its variant) Recipes

A delightfully multidisciplinary article in yesterday’s New York Times looks at the milk-based cocktail the White Russian through the lens of its re-popularization by fans of the Coen Brothers film The Big Lebowski. Part film article, part cocktail profile, part sociological investigation, Steven Kurutz covers the drink’s movements in and out of fashion, wetting readers’ appetites for a slurp of the milk, vodka and Kalhua concoction. Thankfully, the Times includes one recipe, though the Internet abounds with variations. Here, then, are the 5 best:

  • CocktailDB has the White Russian recipe in what might be its most skeletal version: in a six ounce glass, put one ounce vodka and 3/4 ounces Kahlua, add ice then cream.
  • cdkitchen adapts the traditional recipe to the flavored vodka trend, with a version that uses vanilla vodka and light cream. The White Russian gets some makeovers after the jump.
  • DrinksMixer, meanwhile, presents a familiar White Russian variant with their recipe for a Black Russian, which essentially involves cutting out the dairy.
  • Drinkolic offers a particularly holiday-appropriate White Russian substitute, the Dirty Russian. Though there are competing versions, their recipe calls for 1 and a half ounces of coffee liqueur and 4 and a half ounces of eggnog. It’s terrifying, but also strangely appealing.
  • DrinkNation presents one version of the Dirty Mother, a drink that many White Russian fans dabble in. The difference involves substituting brandy or tequila for the usual vodka, depending on who you ask. Drinknation does the tequila variant, while DrinkSwap’s version uses brandy and drops the dairy.

Honorable Mentions

CocktailDB features a recipe for the White Russian’s tropical cousin: Melon’s Russian. It involves lime and soda instead of a dairy product.

If you’re looking for a food to accompany your White Russian-sipping, Schenectady, New York’s Daily Gazette has a White Russian cake recipe that’ll provide whatever calories the drink leaves you lacking.

If you’re not good with words, finally, here’s a video demonstration:
