Top 5 Feminist Posers
The passionate ladies over at Feministing released a listicle today outing some feminist poseurs. Some of their entries are brave, others are obvious, some are missing. Like all sexual-political polemics, though, all the entries are conversation sparkers. So, behold, here are Feministing’s Top 5 Feminist Posers:
- 5. The Spice Girls: As much as their music was the epitome of disposable 90s pop, I’m not sure I agree with this call. They offered so many models of femininity and became so powerful, is it possible the good they did outweighed the damage? I mean, just look how strong the Spice Girls are in this early video:
- 4. Tyra Banks: This one I’d tend to agree with, especially since she channeled her clout as a supermodel (rarely considered an empowering job) into a role as primetime dasher of young womens’ dreams:
- 3. Me Rings: A slightly obscure gimmick the jewelry industry hatched to sell non-marrying feminists something expensive, Me Rings are a great example of how niche-marketing can totally corrupt a niche’s niche-worthiness (forthcoming Listicles list: Top 10 Niches Markets Whose Niches No Longer Exist).
- 2. Sex and the City: Not unrelated to the Me Ring micro-phenomenon, the idea that conspicuous consumption can somehow be politically progressive got thoroughly disproved on this show and finally destroyed in the shopping montage frenzy that was the Sex and the City movie.
- 1. Sarah Palin: Well, duh.
