The Top 50 Drug Trips in Movies
The bloggers at Den of Geek compiled an epic list of the Top 50 Trips in Movies, ranging from eerily poignant hallucinations (Requiem for a Dream) to coked-up dance-offs (Starksy & Hutch). Here are their top ten picks:
10. American Beauty Suburban dad Kevin Spacey picks up a pot habit from the teen dealer next door, giving him this now-iconic reefer dream of a virginal Mena Suvari, covered in rose petals (were the imagery any more complex I wouldn’t have believed Spacey as a stoner).
9. Easy Rider’s Dennis Hopper and friends have a bad trip in New Orleans.
8. Alice in Wonderland barely hides the psychedelic mushroom allusions.
7. Performance star James Fox “researched the heavy stuff among the mobsters of London,” says Den of Geek, “but then overdid it by actually trying out psychedelic drug Dimethyltryptamine during production.”
6. A Scanner Darkly introduces the audience to new drug “Substance D,” and Keanu Reeves’s trip is made especially trippy by the animation style.
5. The Matrix gives us another high Keanu, when his character Neo takes the “blue pill.” Before Neo wakes up bald and naked in a womb of the future (I think I can see his boy parts), he tweaks out while Morpheus looks on.
4. Altered States introduces William Hurt to Peyote, which gives him visions of crucifixions and goat’s heads.
3. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is ripe for road “trip” jokes. Even though Johnny Depp’s Hunter S. Thompson is high for the whole film, the most memorable hallucination comes at a Jefferson Airplane concert, where he thinks he sees himself in another audience member (the real Thompson).
2. The Big Lebowski’s Dude (Jeff Bridges) even trips cool: engaging in choreographed dances with showgirls.
1. Rosemary’s Baby is the result of a drugged rape by Satan, and Mia Farrow’s hallucinations are downright frightening.
Geek leaves almost no stoner unturned–except this subtle bit from 1995’s Friday. Not every trip needs high-concept hallucinatory sequences. Sometimes a ceramic Basset hound is enough make one ask oneself, “Am I tripping?”

At a loss for any movie drug trips to add to the pot (pun intended), here are a couple of memorable TV drug trips:
- Homer Simpson, in a thinly-veiled drug trip sequence, overdoses on Chief Wigum’s chili at the chili cook-off, and meets his coyote spirit guide voiced by Willie Nelson (sadly not available online).
- The boys from South Park, desperate for a great news story to broadcast on their closed-circuit school news show, try to come up with ideas by taking cough medicine in order to hallucinate.
