5 More Black and White Music Videos
Some time ago (two weeks, or 10 list-years) we posted a humble list of 5 great black and white music videos. Subsequently, we (I) have discovered that there are many more than we originally thought, several of which deserve to be memorialized in a list. So behold, Listicles’ second list of 5 Great Black and White Music Videos:
5. LL Cool J, “Mama Said Knock You Out”
Not the most imaginative, but high-impact nonetheless, LL’s shadowboxing to one of his best songs certainly helped give him some edge after he introduced the world to the sensitive rapper concept. Black and white videos get more high-concept after the jump.
4. Red Hot Chili Peppers, “Give it Away”
Longtime music video innovators, the Chili Peppers scored with this gem of shiny, monochrome desert surrealism. Their other black and white classic, the carnivalesque Soul to Squeeze, is terrific but covers similar imagery to our next entry.
3. k.d. lang, “Constant Craving”
Somewhere between German Expressionism, film noir and David Lynch, Mark Romanek’s macabre music hall is typically brilliant. Proving the versatility of black and white, Romanek creates a distinctly different feel with our next entry.
2. Jay-Z, “99 Problems”
It’s slightly baffling that we missed this the first time around, but so goes. Interesting fact: the official video is nowhere to be found, but there are dozens of remixes put to the original footage on YouTube, hence our inclusion here of the Danger Mouse remix from his Grey Album. Aside from all the cool location shooting and meta-death ending, Rick Rubin’s beard and costume are the best thing about this classic of black and white music videology.
1. Beck, “Cellphone’s Dead”
Leave it to Michel Gondry to come up with a video stranger than the track, which is another sort-of-rap song from everyone’s favorite white art pop pseudo-MC Scientologist. Always a fan of confining loops and shifting shapes, Gondry combines the two with a decidedly Guy Maddin treatment to make this video both modern and retro.
Honorable Mentions
“You Shook Me All Night Long” by AC/DC: sadly, only the narrative half of this video is in black and white (the performance footage is in color), because its awesome 80s essence is deliciously fun to watch (the infectious song helps).
“Ashes to Ashes” by David Bowie: again, one particularly awesome section of this generally tripped-out video is in black and white, and would quickly qualify the video for this list.
Up Next: Listicles listifies another music video genre, the animated music video. Some entries are already in the can (Gorillaz, Kanye West, Chili Peppers), but suggestions are always welcome in the comments.
